Chicken Update: Sam KvaleCommunity Space -  8/5/09
Sam Kvale got into raising chickens while he was working on organic farms in New Zealand.  He is now raising about 100 chickens on the 1-acre “community space” inside the Bemidji city limits.  He had to obtain a $35 livestock permit to do so, and says it’s possible for almost anyone to raise urban chickens.  He’s conducting a chicken workshop this Sunday (August 9, 2009) at 2 p.m. at the community space, 1227 Norton Ave in Bemidji.  To register call Sam at 218/368-8738 or email koalakvale@gmail.com.  The workshop costs $5.


Northland Bison Ranch -  7/29/09
Dave and Pam Johnson have about 80 head of bison on their 240-acre Northland Bison Ranch near Nevis MN.  They process about 25 grass-fed hormone-free animals each year, and sell the meat in local supermarkets in Park Rapids and Walker.  The Douglas Lodge restaurant at Itasca State Park also offers local Northland bison on its menu.  The bison they raise are unchanged from the wild animals that once roamed America’s plains by the millions.  Dave and Pam offer tours of their herd at 10:30, 1:30 and 3:30 during the summer (call ahead). James Frenzel of Golden Willow Farm -  7/15/09
James Frenzel grows organic, grass-fed beef on his 400-acre Golden Willow Farm in the Kelliher area. On national “Cow Appreciation Day” he described his substantial experience in farming, how he raises Red Angus Crossbred cattle and rotates their pasture. He also explains why green grass makes superior feed before seed heads appear. James said that his grazing techniques lead to higher levels of Omega 3 fatty acids in the fatty parts of the beef than in cattle raised by more typical agribusiness methods. Joe Gans of Rock Ridge Gardens -  7/8/09
Joe Gans and his wife Barbara operate Rock Ridge Gardens near Aitkin.  Joe and Barbara raise Cornish Cross chickens and also have some laying hens on their 37-acre homestead. This is their third year in the chicken-producing business. Even though most of their land is bog, the business is growing! In the first year they raised 25 chickens; in year 2, 175; and this year they are growing 300. Cornish Cross is a meat breed.  These chickens develop large breasts very rapidly and can’t stand on their own if they get too big. The chickens are raised in “movable pens” as developed by sustainable ag guru Joel Salatin. The layers live in a different type of pen with wheels that Joe calls the “Egg Mobile.”  Joe also built his own chicken plucker, based on Herrick Kimball's Whizbang Chicken Plucker design.  He recommends the magazine, Backyard Poultry, to aspiring chicken growers. The Gans’ sell their chickens and eggs by word of mouth.  Joe tells us about the chicken operation in this interview:


Kathy Draeger of Big Stone County -  7/1/09
Two years ago Kathy Draeger and her family moved from the Twin Cities to her husband's family's 320-acre homestead in Big Stone County. As "beginning farmers," they grow a 5-acre market garden and are gearing up to use 90 acres to grow grass fed beef, and are putting in another 80 acres of organic alfalfa. Kathy is also statewide director of the U of MN's Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships. That organizaton is engaged in a number of projects related to sustainability--including food, energy, natural resources and sustainable tourism. Pancakes: from home kitchen to commercial product -  4/15/09
Donna Barstad operates Barstad's Pancakes in Littlefork MN. Donna developed her pancake mix for her son who was living away from home. He could just add water and have the same pancakes he would have at home. Over time, and in response to increasing demand, Donna decided to distribute her mix commercially. You can find Barstad's Pancakes, at Ogle's in Grand Rapids and Super 1 stores in Hibbing and Virginia, as well as in other stores around MN. She uses flours from Natural Way Mills in Middle River to make her mix, which consists of gold n white flour, sweet cream buttermilk, powdered eggs, natural sugar, powdered butter, baking powder, whole wheat flour, rye flour, barley flour, wheat germ, soy flour, oatmeal, buckwheat flour, oat bran, corn meal, wheat bran, baking soda and sea salt. Sapping for Yourself -  4/8/09
Sandy Roggenkamp and Peter Jongewaard live in Canyon, MN.  They grow much of their own food and also tap trees on their property at maple syruping time.  Their 15 maple trees generally supply just enough sap to keep them in syrup for the year.  Sandy tells us how she taps trees, boils sap, and uses the syrup in this intereview.

Linda Kingery on "Food Sheds" and "Food Sovereignty" -  3/25/09
Linda Kingery is Director of the Univeristy of Minnesota's NW Regional Sustainable Development Partnership and a member of the Headwaters Food Sovereignty Council in Bemidji. Linda explains the concepts of "foodshed" and "food sovereignty" in this interview. The Headwaters Food Sovereignty Council has compiled a list of 80 growers in the region encompassed by the Red Lake, Leech Lake and White Earth Reservations and the 10 counties between. Linda also told us about an upcoming ITV workshop with US Representative Collin Peterson on April 17th in Room 111, Deputy Hall, Bemidji State University. Del Stubbs talks about growing fruit trees in northern MN -  3/18/09
Del Stubbs is an orchardist and wood carver from the Pinewood area (about 20 miles NW of Bemidji). He has grafted hundreds of trees and grows 85 varieties of apples in his orchard. In this interview he tells us about growing fruit trees in northern climates and a grafting workshop in Pinewood on April 11th. There are 2 sessions--8:30-noon and 1:30-5 p.m. Cost of the workshop is $25 and includes three apple trees you have grafted yourself and a grafting knife. Jane Grimsbo Jewett and Sustainable Farming -  2/25/09
Jane Grimsbo Jewett is the third generation of her family to own the land that she farms in rural Palisade. She works for MISA (MN Institute for Sustainable Agriculture) and is the volunteer producer for KAXE's local foods segment. As a program producer, she lets us know about people who farm in our area and helps us connect with them. Jane raises hogs, chickens (eggs) and beef in a sustainable manner on Willow Sedge Farm. In this interview she explains how she rotates pigs and other animals through a series of pens. The animals dig up the dirt, fertilize it, and break down hay that is spread on the ground. Jane follows the animals with gardens planted in the fertile soil. Jane sells pork, eggs and other farm products. Talking Potatoes on the Local Food Scene with the Vogts -  2/11/09
Roger and Markell Vogt are potato growers from south of Palisade. Their 430-acre farm is on Aitkin County peat land. Last year the 60-70 acres that they devoted to potato production yielded 2 million pounds of potatoes! Roger and Markell pay close attention to nature in deciding how to maintain healthy soil, which leads to healthy plants and high quality potatoes. They were recently in St Paul to talk to legislators about farm issues.

Trout in the Classroom -  1/7/09
Interviews with Steve Young of the Bemidji Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and Wyatt Tennyson and Emily Falldorf, students in Jeff Wade's 5th grade class at Northern Elementary School in Bemidji. Students in Jeff's class raise trout from eggs in a large aquarium. They will release the two-inch fry this Spring in an area stream.

A talk with Pat Altrichter and Jean Ciborowski -  12/3/08
On today's local food segment, we talked to Pat Altrichter and Jean Ciborowski. Pat and her sister Judy operate a 220-acre farm in Randall MN. They received a 3-year Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant to establish a you-pick Saskatoon (juneberry) patch at their farm. They also raise beef cattle, blueberries, cherries, plums, apples, pears, and are experimenting with peaches!

Jean Ciborowski works for the demonstration grant program at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. She told us more about the grant program and how to apply. John Fisher-Merritt's 200-acre farm in Wrenshall is called The Food Farm. John distributed over 130 shares of food to 280 families this year, and also sells produce to the Whole Foods Co-op in Duluth and area restaurants. He offers winter CSA shares, operates a large storage cellar and mentors beginning farmers. In this interview John describes his system and shares advice about preparing and storing vegetables for the winter.

Her farm in Little Falls is home to between 120 and 140 Nubian dairy goats.  Missy comes from a farming family.  She has been raising goats for 14 years.  She sells the milk to a producer in Wisconsin that uses it to make cheese. 


Maggie talks with local Farmer Ben Clayton - added 10/1/08
If you live in Grand Rapids, you've probably seen Ben Clayton's truck parked in the K Mart lot on Hwy 169 South. Ben and his mom and grandmother sell sweet corn and other veggies from the truck every weekday during the summer. Ben's an agronomy student at the University of MN Crookston. He tells us about how he got into farming and how he's growing his vegetable business. (Special thanks to Jane Grimsbo Jewett for helping us produce this interview!)

Del is a world-renowned wood carver who also experiments with cold-weather fruit varieties at his 160-acre farm in Pinewood. Del grows 85 varieties of apples, 22 kinds of plums, 20 different pears, and several varieties of grapes and currants on his farm. He sells some of his apples at Harmony Food Co-op in Bemidji.

Jody and Erick DeVault are members of the Leech Lake Band who gather wild rice, fish and hunt for a large part of their diet. They also have a garden and can and freeze much of their own food. Jody works for Leech Lake's Diabetes Reduction Program. Jody and Erick told us about their largely traditional diet and its effect on their health.
