We care deeply about the natural world around us here at KAXE-KBXE.  Each week, our resident phenologist John Latimer's Phenology Report provides a comprehensive look at what's  happening in nature here in northern Minnesota. This week's report includes sightings of grey jays, great blue herons, mallards and barred owls as well as an explanation of tundra swan identification and reports from John's cross country ski experience which includes a playful encounter with an otter.  Also, John is gathering data on ice thickness, so please send along information about the thickness of ice on your lake!  Click on the link for the full report!

What kinds of activity are you noticing out in nature?  Send us a note via email or leave a voicemail at 218.999.9876.  We'd love to hear about it.

If you love this stuff, you'll dig our KAXE-KBXE Season Watch Page on Facebook.  Check it out!

Listen to our morning show every Tuesday morning for the full phenology

As a mail carrier in rural Grand Rapids, Minn., for 35 years, John Latimer put his own stamp on a career that delivered more than letters. Indeed, while driving the hundred-mile round-trip daily route, he passed the time by observing and recording seasonal changes in nature, learning everything he could about the area’s weather, plants and animals, and becoming the go-to guy who could answer customers’ questions about what they were seeing in the environment.
