It’s a labor of love to
operate a community/public radio station in a place like rural northern
Minnesota. KAXE does it independently, heroically,…lovingly,…without
the support of any educational institution or network. A deep and
heartfelt interdependence exists between KAXE, the region it serves, and
the people who listen. There are only 13 people per square kilometer
under KAXE’s signal. This is a land of lakes, bogs, iron mines,
resorts, fish, deer, and forests. If KAXE appealed only to an
intellectual elite it could not survive. If the programming wasn’t top
notch it couldn’t attract enough members to stay afloat. If it didn’t
provide meaningful and significant service to people, organizations, and
communities no one would care. This is radio honed in a harsh
environment compared to its urban cousins. It is good radio—sometimes
even great radio—it is also radio that does good things.
That’s why this section is called
romance. It’s about caring. That’s how things get done in the
northwoods. People come together to pool their resources to make good
things happen—things they care about.
Listener support is KAXE’s largest
source of funds. It is the most crucial factor in KAXE’s survival. If
