Native American Art

Grant Frashier, KAXE/KBXE Photographer

Pow Wow season is here! Across northern Minnesota, opportunities to attend pow wows are many.  Dr. Anton Treuer stopped by the KBXE Studio recently and shared some of the history of pow wows as well as what a person might expect who has never been.   Thank goodness we live in a region rich with this cultural experience.

"I've yet to find an indigenous people who, in their language, there's  a specific word for art, because it's so intrinsic, and so much a part of who we are as a people.  It's there.  It's a continuous part."  - Karen Goulet

Karen Goulet is the Program Director for the Native American Art Gallery inside the soon to be complete .  She stopped by the KBXE studio to talk about the impact and societal role of art and the impact the new gallery will have on the region.

Contemporary Ojibwe Artist Jim Denomie uses his art as a means of social and cultural commentary.  In this segment of Area Voices, he discusses his craft, his intent and how re-discovering his identity helped him navigate through life.
