Bemidji Area Special Olympics Sending Two to National Competition

Jun 27, 2018

Shawn Kiefer and Parker Bruns will compete in the USA Special Olympics July 1st thru 6th in Seattle, Washington.   Shawn stopped by the KBXE studio to chat about how he's preparing.  He was joined by Shannon Murray, Community Outreach Specialist for Bemidji Area Special Olympics, and Lisa Bruns whose son Parker Bruns is also a competitor.

Downtown Bemidji is sending Shawn and Parker off to Seattle with a day of celebration tomorrow (Thursday, June 28).  The public is invited to have coffee and donuts with Shawn and Parker at Raphael's Bakery from 10-11am.  Shawn and Parker will be at Harmony Co-op from 2-4pm to visit with people.  At 5pm, Lucky Dog's Restaurant will host the official Community Send-off Presentation led by Mayor Albrecht.  The crowd is welcome to pop over to Big River Scoop after that for the Special Olympics Flavor of the Day and after the ice cream treat,  everyone is invited to Bemidji Brewing at 7pm for a toast to the athletes before they go for the gold!

Have fun and kick some booty, boys!

If you or someone you know would like to get involved in Bemidji Area Special Olympics either as a participant or as a volunteer, send Shannon an email or give her a call at 218.368.8002.  Special Olympics is always in need of volunteers and they've implimented a program called "Unified Sports" where people who do not have a disability can play basketball, bowl, jog, swim, etc. alongside the Special Olympics athletes.  Unified Sports is meant to break down barriers, cultivate wellness and build community.  Connect with your local Special Olympics chapter to find out how to get involved!
