U.S. Supreme Court rulings in Wisconsin in 1983, and in Minnesota in 1999, affirmed the off-reservation hunting, fishing and gathering rights in territories ceded by the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) in 19th century treaties with the Federal Government.  These and other court rulings explain why treaties still matter today. Tribal attorney Frank Bibeau explains how six bands of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe plan to defend those rights in the ceded territories of northern Minnesota.
